There is a "sales channel" on satellite TV that often has a program called "The Knife Show." I am strangely attracted to this show. It must strike some primordial spot in my male brain, because I find myself coveting giant bowie knives and imagining that I am slashing down saplings in the wilderness in order to build an emergency latrine ... or something. The host of the show presents a collection of knives and the dock begins to tick, leaving less and less time to call the 800 number to purchase the cutlery before the "deal" expires. I begin to rationalize that I should buy the collection of 300 assorted hunting and sporting knives and give them out as Christmas gifts to professional friends and referral sources. GADGETS that make our hectic lives easier are worth their weight in gold.
But the trouble is, we tend to buy things with the best of intentions, only to shove them in the back of a cupboard where they never see the light of day again.
Be selective, don't buy anything that's really nothing more than a gimmick. And in my experience, if the gadget is readily at hand, I'm more likely to use it.
Gadgets can make a great gift for people who are difficult to buy for, but, once again, be selective, or that gift will just end up in the charity bag |

Fancy becoming an instant wine expert? Just follow a few of these handy hints and to some you'll seem like a fully trained sommelier.
It's important to swill the vino around your glass before sticking your nose in, then taking a moderate swig and slurping it around your mouth. Mention words like bouquet and body, throw in a few phrases from the label on the back of the bottle and your dinner guests will either ridicule you or offer a ripple of applause.
