IF you're the sort of person who can't leave the house without the latest iPod, mobile phone and sat-nav in your pocket, Las Vegas is the place for you. Gadget geeks from all over the world have descended on the desert city for the annual Consumer Electronics Show, where more than 2700 companies are unveiling more than 20,000 products. It's the place to be if you want to know what technologies we're likely to be using in the years ahead. And with so much on offer, only the very best stand out. Here's a look at some of the ideas, gadgets and developments catching the eye this year . . . STARRY NIGHT SLEEP TECHNOLOGY BED If you're desperate for a good night's sleep, this is for you. It has two adjustable sections so each of you can control tilt and temperature, and when sensors detect snoring, it lifts your head up. SONY XEL-1 TELEVISION Not to be outdone in the battle to make TVs as thin as possible, Sony have harnessed organic LED technology to create screens only 3mm thick. They showed a prototype 20-inch version this week, but an 11-inch version is about to go on sale for more than pounds 1200. SATELLITE PERSONAL TRACKER The Spot, a personal satellite messenger, was a popular exhibit with the crowds in Las Vegas. The pocket-sized device can send emergency messages with your location or ones that just let people know you're okay. It is on sale now. REMOTE CONTROL CARS General Motors boss Rick Wagoner predicted cars which drive themselves would be available in 10 years. The US military hold a race for such vehicles and the standard is improving every year. WI-FI PHONE Netgear unveiled their latest phone to take advantage of the potential of the internet to make cheap phone calls. The Wi-Fi phone makes and receives Skype internet phone calls wherever a wireless internet connection is available. THE PHILIPS GOGEAR SA6500 There are plenty of reasons why portable video players haven't been popular, including cost and formatting problems. Philips' four-inch player not only costs just pounds 100 but is also as easy to use as your average MP3 player, unlike most other models. BLU-RAY PLAYER It looks like the war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD is over. The news that film-makers Warner are defecting to Sony's Blu-Ray camp means it's almost certain to be the format of choice. MOTOROKR T505 The Motorokr T505 is a Bluetooth-enabled device that allows the user to play music or make telephone calls using their car stereo speakers. TASER STUN GUNS They might be used by US police forces to stop dangerous criminals but these Taser electric stun guns are being aimed at members of the public worried about their safety and who are also concerned about style. Check out the natty leopardprint version. MYVU PERSONAL MEDIA VIEWER This has been hailed as a breakthrough for entertainment on the move. Using tiny, highquality video screens, the Myvu is a personal way to watch films, TV or play video games. MOTORBIKE MUSIC Parrot has produced the first wireless hands-free music kit for motorcyclists. The SK4000 features FM RDS radio and wireless mobile remote control. Bikers can switch between songs and answer calls through the remote fixed to the bike's handlebar. It also features voice recognition software. THE TN GAMING VEST This makes game-playing more vivid by inflating and deflating cells. If you're shot, you feel the bullet, and if you accelerate, you feel the G-force.
