"NEW YORK -- WomensWallStreet.com, a popular online financial magazine for women, today released the results of its first annual ""Gadgets & Gismos"" survey.
So what is 2005's must-have gadget? One out of four women said that Apple's iPod was the hottest new thing on the market this year, followed by high definition televisions (HDTV)/flat screen televisions with 21 percent of votes, GPS navigation (18 percent) and TiVo/Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) with 16 percent.
And what are the hottest gadgets for kids? Of mothers surveyed, 37 percent said their kids are begging for a cell phone, and 20 percent say it's all about the iPod/MP3 player. Gameboys and high-speed Internet tied for third with 19 percent each.
But are tech gadgets always must-haves? Not when it comes to what your partner has in hand. When asked which of their partner's possessions they would most like to throw out the window, surprisingly, 30 percent of women would toss the Playstation/Nintendo/Xbox, followed closely by their computer with 25 percent and cell phone with 24 percent. Popular write-in answers included ""mother,"" ""friends"" and ""his body.""
""It's clear that technology can be both incredibly helpful and extremely annoying,"" said Pamela Little, WomensWallStreet.com's editor in chief. ""We all have those items that we couldn't live without, but at times would pay money to see our partner's cell phone get run over by a semi truck.""
So what non-tech addictions would women never give up? One out of four women said they would never surrender their morning coffee. Wine and margaritas got eight percent of the vote, followed by credit cards (6 percent), magazines (5 percent) and beauty products (5 percent). When asked what ""old school"" gadget they couldn't live without, 41 percent said washer and dryer, followed by air conditioner with 37 percent of the vote. Microwave was third with 13 percent of the vote, followed by dishwasher with 8 percent.
""Women do love gadgets and gismos,"" said Little. ""But they keep things in perspective. After all, could a cell phone or TiVo make up for your morning coffee or an air conditioner on a hot summer day? I don't think so.""
